Why Some Dogs Struggle With Bigger Dogs

Have you ever noticed that your dog seems perfectly happy around dogs their own size, but suddenly becomes anxious, barky, or defensive when faced with a much larger dog? You’re not alone. Many dogs show what looks like “social dysfunction” with bigger dogs, and there are good reasons why this can happen.

At Kalmpets, we like to look beneath the behaviour to understand why your dog is reacting this way. Often, what seems like “bad behaviour” is really your dog’s way of keeping themselves safe.

Why do some dogs find bigger dogs difficult?

1. Early learning matters

Puppies go through a sensitive socialisation period between 3 and 14 weeks of age. If they don’t have positive experiences with a variety of dogs (including larger ones) during this window, they may grow up unsure about how to interact. A single scary incident with a large dog at this age can also create a lasting fear.

2. Big dogs, big signals

Dogs read body language very carefully. A tail wag or play bow from a large dog looks much bigger and more forceful than from a small dog. What was meant as a friendly bounce can feel overwhelming or even threatening.

3. Self-protection

Smaller dogs instinctively know they’re more vulnerable. Barking, lunging, or snapping at a bigger dog is often not aggression; it’s defensive behaviour. Your dog is saying, “Please don’t come closer, I don’t feel safe.”

4. Learned patterns

Dogs are clever. If they bark at a bigger dog and that dog goes away, they learn that this strategy works. Over time, it becomes their default response.

5. Individual differences

Just like people, dogs vary in temperament. Some are naturally more cautious or anxious. Dogs experiencing pain or discomfort may also become more defensive.

What can help?

Final thoughts

Struggles with larger dogs are very common and often rooted in fear, not “naughtiness.” With patience, safe exposure, and the right support, most dogs can learn to feel more confident and less defensive.

At Kalmpets, we work with families every day to understand the why behind behaviour and create practical steps forward. If your dog finds bigger dogs worrying, reach out. We’d love to help both you and your dog feel more at ease.
